As you can see, this season’s Viking Costumes are quite varied and are available in men, women, and child sizes. However, there are some general characteristics that you can expect to see in many of today’s costumes. The typical Viking clothing worn by the men include a tunic, trousers, and a belt. Women in Viking Communities usually wore a dress with a hangerock (also known as an overskirt or apron). Some adorned their clothing with large brooches which often were also used as fasteners for the garment pieces. Since Vikings originated from the cold climate in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark; they often wore furs.
Today’s Viking Costumes are based on these traditional components but, as with many historical costumes, there are also added features and details that were most likely not authentic to Viking clothing. These details are added to make the costume attractive and stand out.
When you are dressing as a Viking Warrior or a Viking Princess, try having a little fun with it when you mingle at your costume party by acting the part as well. Tell people you’ve been at sea on your longship. Give them details about your latest conquest. Tell them found a new home in a distant land called Iceland where you and your Princess (or Warrior) will live. Could you be Eric the Red? Or would you prefer to be Leif Erikson, exploring North America about 500 years before Christopher Columbus even arrived?
Vikings were not actually called such during the Viking Age. There were called “Danes“, “Gail“, or “Northmen“. The term “Viking” was used much later and the origin is not clear. Some theorize that the name came from the Norse word ‘vik’, which means bay or creek. The term to go “a-viking” probably meant to go sailing to gain riches (i.e., to go raiding).
